Canelo Fight Next

What's Next for Canelo Alvarez?

Unbeaten Mexican Will Defend Undisputed Championship

By Esther Lin, Premier Boxing Champions

The crowd at the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas erupted in boos when Jim Gray asked Canelo Alvarez if he would consider fighting David Benavidez next.

Alvarez, the undisputed super middleweight champion, had just defeated Gennadiy Golovkin by unanimous decision in a trilogy fight that was billed as one of the biggest boxing matches of the year. But all anyone wanted to talk about after the fight was whether Alvarez would finally face Benavidez, the unbeaten WBC interim super middleweight champion.

Alvarez has long been criticized for avoiding Benavidez, who is widely considered to be one of the best fighters in the world. But Alvarez has always insisted that he is not afraid of Benavidez and that he will fight him when the time is right.

Now, it seems, the time may finally be right. Benavidez is scheduled to fight David Lemieux on September 28th, and if he wins, it would set up a highly anticipated showdown with Alvarez.
